This report reflects the Green Economy Task Force’s initial findings and recommendations for implementing a sustainable procurement policy in Philadelphia. In working towards a green economy, the Task Force recommends beginning with sustainable procurement because it will yield a significant benefit in a short amount of time. By leveraging the purchasing power of the City, sustainable procurement encourages growth and development of environmentally friendly and socially responsible businesses. In addition, sustainable procurement provides a foundation of support for local sustainable businesses by creating momentum for the development of sustainable products and business in the short, mid and long term. A sustainable procurement policy is the first and most strategic step in the long march towards healthier and more sustainable communities in Philadelphia.
